MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WCHS/WVAH) -- The West Virginia Mountaineers picked up their first win of the season Thursday in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
After leading by six at halftime, Mountaineers (1-1) pulled away in the second half and defeated Monmouth (0-4) 71-53.
WVU was led in scoring by senior Esa Ahmad who scored 16 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Junior Sagaba Konate scored 14 points and pulled in 8 rebounds.
The Mountaineers shot 45.7 percent from the field, but struggled from long range, shooting just 26 percent from 3-point range.
WVU will take on Western Kentucky (2-1) Friday at 9 p.m. in the second round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
