For the first time ever, a group of Ohio girls is bringing home a World Series Championship, and their community couldn't be prouder.

It was a very exciting atmosphere Thursday at Gene Bennet Park, now home of the 2018 Wheelersburg Little League World Series Champions.

On Wednesday, the Wheelersburg 11 and 12 year olds became the first-ever champions from the state of Ohio as they defeated Pennsylvania with a final score of 3-0 in Portland, Oregon.

Wheelersburg earned its way to the World Series by winning the Ohio state tournament and then capturing a regional tournament win in Indiana. Wednesday night's championship game was televised live on ESPN.

“There’s a lot of emotions because there’s been a lot of hours up here for these kids,” Jonathan Eaton, a friend of the team, said.

Haleigh Collier, a friend of girls on the team, is happy to show her support for them.

“It’s really cool to say that those are my friends out there,” she said.

The team is expected to arrive at the park around 10:45 p.m. and be greeted with community members and fans for a welcome home celebration.
