Marshall pulls away from FIU in second half, picks up fourth consecutive win

    After leading by one at halftime, Marshall outscored FIU by 15 in the second half to pick up its fourth consecutive win.

    The Herd (17-13, 10-7) defeated FIU (18-12, 9-8) 94-78 Wednesday night, locking up the sixth seed in the Conference USA Tournament.

    Marshall led 47-46 at the half, but outscored the Golden Panthers 47-32 in the second half to complete the season sweep of FIU.

    Senior guard C.J. Burks led the Herd with 21 points and seven assists.

    Fellow senior Jon Elmore scored 18, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out six assists. With two guaranteed games remaining, Elmore is 85 points from tying Skip Henderson for the school's all-time scoring record. In the Herd's last game, Elmore became Conference USA's all-time leading scorer.

    Sophomore Darius George was 5 of 10 from the field and scored a season-high 14. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

    The Herd also got some big contributions from its bench.

    Freshman Taevion Kinsey scored 18 and senior Rondale Watson scored 10 coming off the bench.

    The Golden Panthers had five players score in double-figured and were led by Osasumwen Osaghae who scored 19 and had 11 rebounds.

    The Herd will be back in the Cam Henderson Center Saturday when it takes on FAU at noon on senior day.

    With the win Wednesday night, Marshall clinched the sixth seed in the conference tournament and will take on Rice in the first round.
