Marshall moves on to C-USA championship game with record-setting performance
Marshall used a record-setting performance to clinch a berth in the Conference USA championship game.
The sixth-seeded Thundering Herd (20-14) hit 19 3-pointers to beat second-seeded Louisiana Tech (23-10) 93-77 Friday afternoon in Birmingham, Al.
Marshall led the Bulldogs 49-41 at the half, with 42 of those points coming off 3-point shots. The Herd shot 14-23 from beyond the arc in the first half of play.
The sharp-shooting Herd added five more 3-point buckets in the second half, shattering the C-USA Tournament record of 15. Marshal finished the game shooting 19-35 (54.3 percent) from 3-point territory.
The Herd had five players score in double-figures and was led by guard Jon Elmore who scored 21 points all on 3-pointers. Senior forward Ryan Taylor scored 19 and pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
Seniors Stevie Browning and Austin Loop each scored 18, and C.J. Burks came off the Marshall bench and scored 11 on 4-5 shooting.
Marshall fell to Louisiana Tech in the regular season but trailed for just 2:43 and led by as many as 18 in the semifinal matchup.
Marshall will take on the top seed Middle Tennessee (29-4). The Blue Raiders swept the regular season between the two teams.
This will be Marshall’s second appearance in the C-USA championship game. In 2012, the Herd fell 83-57 to Memphis in the title game. That was also the last time the Herd reached the 20 win mark.
After falling to Memphis, the Herd’s season ended a few days later with a loss at Middle Tennessee in the NIT.
