Marshall basketball wins season opener over EKU

The Marshall Thundering Herd got the new season started with a win over Eastern Kentucky Wednesday night.

After advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, Dan D'Antoni's Herd (1-0) went on the road to start the 2018-19 campaign and defeated EKU (0-1) 105-77.

Martinsburg native C.J. Burks led all scorers with 30 points on 12 of 15 shooting. Do-it-all guard Jon Elmore went 5 of 16 from the floor and finished the game with 20 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Jannson Williams scored 11 for the Herd and pulled in 8 rebounds.

In his regular season debut, freshman Taevion Kinsey scored 14 points.

As a team, the Herd shot 50 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from beyond 3-point range.

Eastern Kentucky, which is coached by former Marshall player A.W. Hamilton, was led by senior Nick Mayo who recorded a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

Marshall will return home on Sunday when it takes on the Hofstra Pride at 2:30 p.m.
