Nitro High School's Torri Porterfield has been named the St. Mary's Medical Center Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which recognizes her excellence in the classroom and in athletics.
The senior was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to the college of her choice Thursday at Nitro High School.
Porterfield was named the St. Mary's Medical Center Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 1 and beat out 19 other scholar-athletes of the week to win the scholar-athlete of the year award.
Porterfield is a five-sport athlete at Nitro and also carries a 4.4 cumulative grade point average. She plays soccer, basketball, and softball, and also runs track and cross country for the Wildcats. Porterfield said her favorite sport is basketball.
In addition to playing five sports and carrying a heavy academic load, Porterfield is also coming off ACL reconstructive surgery but said she hopes to clear to play by the start of basketball season.
In the future, Porterfield said is considering playing sports at the collegiate level, but has not picked a school.
She said she wants to major in orthopedic surgery.
