Bridgeport wins fifth straight state title over Wayne
The Bridgeport Indians overcame an early deficit and score nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to their fifth consecutive Class AA state baseball championship.
The Indians (30-10) won the Class AA championship in a thrilling 17-15 game over Wayne (26-6) Saturday at Appalachian Power Park.
The Pioneers got off to a hot start at the plate and jumped out to a 7-5 lead heading into the third inning.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Wayne led the Indians 13-8, but that lead would not survive Bridgeport's rally in the bottom half of the inning.
Using five RBI singles and an RBI double, the Indians scored nine runs to take a 17-13 lead heading into the final inning.
Wayne score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, but could not overcome the Indians' sixth inning rally.
Senior third baseman Chapin Murphy led the way for Bridgeport going 3-4 at the plate with five RBI.
Cooper Hineman recorded three RBI and Tyler Pitzer and Koby Kiefer had two RBI each.
