George Washington defeats Riverside in Wendy's Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week
George Washington survived a late comeback attempt and defeated Riverside in our Wendy's Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week presented by the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute.
The Patriots (5-3) picked up their fourth consecutive win with a 21-14 victory over the Warriors (4-5).
George Washington got the scoring stated midway through the first when Jaquan Hall took an inside handoff, bounced it to the outside and raced 38 yards to the endzone to put the Patriots up 7-0.
Early in the second, George Washington looked like it was going to add to its lead when Hall broke another big run and looks looked he was going to score, but he coughed in up at the goal line and Riverside recovered.
Looking to take advantage of the fumble, Riverside quarterback Mark Scites fired a deep pass but it was picked off by George Washington's Isaac Isabell.
The Patriots would take a 7-0 lead into the half.
Early in the third quarter, Patriots quarterback Grant Wells dropped back and found Logan Leeber across the middle. Leeber broke a couple tackles and was finally brought down at the 5 yard line. On the next play, Wells took the shotgun snap ran left, put his shoulder down and powered into the endzone giving George Washington a 14-0 lead.
Leading by 14, Wells scored on another designed run play to give the Patriots a 21-0 lead, but the Warriors would not go away.
Late in the third quarter, Riverside's Gage Lanham took an inside handoff, got the outside and raced 58 yards to put the Warriors on the board.
Then, in the fourth, Lanham scored again to cut George Washington's lead to 21-14.
The Warriors then recovered an onside kick, but were not able to capitalize and the Patriots held on to win 21-14.
Jaquan Hall was named the Five Star Chevrolet Player of the Game.
