The No. 1 Fairmont Senior Polar Bears capped off a perfect 13-0 season with a Class AA championship win over the No. 2 Bluefield Beavers Friday night at Wheeling Island Stadium.
The Polar Bears defeated the Beavers (12-1) 23-13 to capture their first football state championship since 1946.
Fairmont Senior also got revenge on Bluefield after losing to the Beavers 29-26 in the 2017 title game.
The Polar Bears struck first when Rhett Heston scored on a 44-yard rush. A failed 2-point conversion game Fairmont Senior a 6-0 lead.
Fairmont Senior took a 13-0 lead when Conner Neal connected with J.D. Smith from 25 yards out.
Early in the second quarter, the Polar Bears took a commanding 20-0 lead when Breeden Gilbert scored from 2 yards out.
Bluefield would get on the board late in the first half when Chandler Cooper connected with Ronnell Blevens for a 59-yard touchdown. The score cut Fairmont Senior's lead to 20-7 going into the half.
With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, Fairmont Senior extended its lead when J.D. Smith connected on a 25-yard field goal.
Early in the fourth, the Beavers cut the Polar Bears' lead to 23-13 when Cooper tossed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Johnson.
Bluefield would get the ball back, but Fairmont Senior's defense would close the game out and clinch the Class AA championship for the Polar Bears.
Fairmont Senior's win breaks a streak of back-to-back losses in the title game.
