LEXINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — The Beechwood Tigers won a thriller over Pikeville Friday to win its third straight Kentucky football state championship and 14th overall.
Beechwood (12-2) survived outlasted Pikeville (11-3) and won the Class 1A championship 21-20.
Beechwood got on the board first in the second quarter, but Pikeville would answer quickly to cut the lead to 7-6 in the second quarter. However, a missed extra point would eventually prove to be the difference.
The Tigers would add another score in the second quarter and take a 14-6 lead into the half.
In the third, the Panthers would score on a 65-yard touchdown, but would fail to convert a 2-point conversion and trailed 14-12.
Late in the third, Pikeville would score on a 25-yard strike but would fail to convert another 2-point conversions. The score gave the Panthers their first lead of the game, 20-14.
The Tigers would not trail long and would retake the lead.
Trailing 21-20, Pikeville was driving on a potentially game-winning drive when Beechwood's John Odum picked off a Panther pass in the endzone and sealed the Tiger's championship win.
