A woman accused in one of the worst cases of elder abuse in Charleston's history has pleaded guilty.

Peggy Quesenberry pleaded guilty Thursday in Kanawha County Circuit Court to neglect of an incapacitated adult causing death in relation to the death of her 75-year-old mother, Judy.

Earlier this year, police said she called 911 about her mother having shortness of breath and loss of appetite.

When paramedics got to the home, they said, the house was in unlivable conditions with trash piled waist high.

The elderly woman was found lying in her bed that was covered in feces and urine. She was taken to the hospital and later died.

The state is recommending she serve eight years when she's sentenced in November.

On Thursday, Quesenberry spoke in court.

“I realize now looking back that I should have gotten help sooner than I did,” she said.
