Welch correctional facility escapee taken into custody in Lawrence County, Ohio
A man who escaped a correctional facility in Welch was captured Thursday afternoon in Lawrence County, Ohio.
Charles Wentz, 39, was taken into custody by Lawrence County deputies, according to a news release from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office. Wentz had been wanted since Sunday when he escaped the Steven's Correctional Center in Welch where he was being held for several charges including grand larceny and first-degree robbery.
At about 1 p.m. Thursday, Lawrence County deputies responded to a shoplifting at the Family Dollar on County Road 406. The release said witnesses told deputies a man and woman had stolen item and left in a silver vehicle with a West Virginia license plate.
After patrolling the area, deputies located the vehicle at a resident on Township Road 1026.
The release said a woman at the residence told deputies the Wentz had been driving the car but had left. Deputies returned to the home a short time later and found him.
Deputies put Wentz into handcuffs and as they were walking him to a patrol vehicle, the release said he ran from deputies into a wooded area near Burlington.
A K9 officer was used to track Wentz and he was taken into custody about a mile from the residence.
West Virginia State Police said Christine Rodriguez, 37, was arrested earlier this week by Putnam County Deputies for allegedly aiding Wentz’s escape.
