St. Albans police officers have a warning for the public after an elderly woman had her wallet stolen out of her purse while she was shopping.

The act was captured on surveillance video Wednesday afternoon inside of the Kroger in St. Albans. Officers are searching for two people believed to be involved in the incident.

The victim told police she felt like she was being followed through the grocery store aisles while she shopped.

"It was noticeable on the video that he was following her throughout the store," St. Albans Police Department Sgt. Sheila Pinson said.

While the customer turns her back, the video shows a man dressed in a camouflage hoodie lingering behind her. He reaches in her purse one time to see what is inside. The customer then turns again, leaving her purse in the cart behind her. The video then shows the man reaching in and taking her wallet.

"It is a sad situation. Unfortunately, this time of year while the shopping season is in full swing, people will take the opportunity to prey on the elderly," Pinson said.

Pinson has seen many cases like this. She said anyone can be a victim while not having his or her guard up.

"People just walk away and leave their items in the buggy. That becomes an open door. Someone will come along and steal items right out of there when you are not paying attention," Pinson said.

The St. Albans Police Department is asking anyone who recognizes these individuals to call the department at 304-727-2251.
