New coal mines expected to open in Southern West Virginia
RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) —
Three new coal mines are expected to open in the next couple of years in Raleigh County, WVVA reported.
Raleigh County Commission President Dave Tolliver said at least three different operations have applied for permits.
One of the mines is an Alpha Natural Resources metallurgical operation in Moncoal. A spokesperson for the company said Wednesday the mine is one of the thickest high volume seams in its portfolio, holding about 13 million tons of met coal. The spokesperson said the company is hoping for completion of the Moncoal operation by the end of the year, bringing at least 60 new jobs to the area.
The other two operations are ran by Pocahontas Coal. One is a high wall operation in Josephine and the other is a prep plant near Rhodell. No timeline has been set for the opening of the Pocahontas operations.
