Marshall advances to first NCAA Tournament in 31 years
For the first time since 1987, the Marshall Thundering Herd is in the NCAA Tournament.
Marshall defeated Western Kentucky 67-66 in the Conference USA Championship to advance to the big dance.
Junior Jon Elmore led the way for the Herd scoring 27 points.
Marshall was picked to finish seventh in Conference USA but went on the finish fourth in the regular season. Marshall defeated UTSA in quarterfinals of the conference tournament and then defeated Southern Miss Friday night to advance to the championship game.
Marshall last made it to the NCAA Tournament in 1987 when the Herd defeated Davidson in the Southern Conference Championship.
Saturday night after Marshall's victory, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice called head coach Dan D'Antoni to congratulate him and the Herd on their win.
Marshall will find out its first-round destination and opponent Sunday night.
