HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Former Marshall quarterback Reggie Oliver has died at 66 years old.
Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert announced the news in a tweet Tuesday night.
"We lost a great Son of Marshall today and my heart is broken. Reggie Oliver was a personal friend, a gentleman and an integral piece of the fabric that makes up Marshall's story. Our MU family sends condolences to Reggie's family, especially his mother, and to his many friends," President Gilbert said in a statement.
Oliver was the signal-caller at Marshall from 1971-73, including the immortal Young Thundering Herd team during his sophomore campaign. He played as quarterback after the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people.
Marshall University students and staff hosted a candle-lit vigil for Oliver several days ago after he was seriously injured earlier in August.
