Fiscal Court officials strike down needle exchange proposal in Lawrence County, Ky.
Members of the Lawrence County Fiscal Court in Kentucky voted to reject a needle exchange program.
The proposal was presented by the Lawrence County Health Department Tuesday morning in Louisa. The program would allow drug addicts to turn in used needles for clean ones to reduce the spread of diseases.
The fiscal court unanimously voted not to approve the program. Court officials said there was no accountability for the program, but health department officials disagreed.
The health department director said they are going to adjust the proposal and present it again following the November elections.
Rejection of the program in Lawrence County, Ky., follows controversy in Charleston, W.Va., about a needle exchange program. The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department on Monday suspended its needle exchange program.
