The family of the little girl in Ohio County who passed away from the flu – the first pediatric death in West Virginia this season – identified her as 6-year-old Eden Murray, WTOV reported.

On Monday, the health department confirmed a pediatric death in Ohio County due to the flu virus. The child was a student at Ritchie Elementary School.

Few details have been released, but school leaders meet with health department officials and said other students are safe at school. They also are warning the public to take precautions because the flu is very contagious.

Ohio County Schools Superintendent Kimberly Miller offered her condolences and said grief counselors have been called in for students and staff at Ritchie.

"It's a tragic loss for Ohio County Schools,” Miller said. “We have a very caring, giving staff at Ritchie Elementary School as well as all of our other schools, so we will have a tremendous outreach. My heart goes out to the family."

In Kanawha County, John Law, spokesman for the Kanawha Charleston Health Department, said parents can't be too careful in taking precautions from the flu. He said if someone is sick, he or she should stay home for a few days to prevent spreading the flu.

Law also said it is very important for people not to panic, and it is not too late to get a flu shot.
