Charleston police said the threat of a school shooting at George Washington High School appears unfounded, and no criminal charges will be filed.

The school resource officer will be on hand and extra uniformed police patrols will continue throughout the school day to help alleviate any concerns, police said.

Police investigated reports that a threat had been made toward the school on social media.

Charleston police are investigating a threat made on social media toward a Kanawha County high school.

Kanawha County Schools Communications Director Briana Warmer said parents were alerted late Wednesday night to a social media threat that was made toward George Washington High School for Thursday morning.

Warner said the person responsible for the threat has been identified.

The necessary precautions are being taken to prevent the threat and that includes having more law enforcement at the school, she said.

Several parents took to Facebook Wednesday night saying they received a robocall that said a threat was made on social media and that there will be an increased police presence at the school.

Some parents said they are concerned and may even keep their students home on Thursday.

When asked about the threat late Wednesday night, the Charleston Police Department shift commander said the resource officer at the school is making arrangements to have more officers at the scene, but did not say if it was because of the threat.
