Charleston police seeking shooting suspect

The Charleston Police Department is searching for a man they said shot another man in the back while attempting a robbery.

Police have active warrants on file for Christopher Sean Bennett, 24, of Charleston for charges of first degree-robbery and malicious wounding.

About 10 a.m. Wednesday, Christopher Shane Slater, 26, of Sissonville was dropped off at Thomas Memorial Hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound to his back, a new release from the Charleston Police Department said. Slater told police he and three females went to Vandalia Apartments near the 1500 block of Dorchester Road in Charleston to purchase drugs.

Police said Bennett attempted to rob one of the females – Elizabeth M. Barnett, 27 of St. Albans – while they were inside Slater’s vehicle. During the attempted robbery, Bennett reportedly shot Slater in the back, police said.

Slater was treated and released from the hospital.

Police said Bennett is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his location should contact police.
