The West Virginia University football team has given defensive coordinator Tony Gibson a new three-year contract.

West Virginia says in a news release that the package through the 2019 season is worth $2.7 million, plus incentives.

Gibson is in his fourth season on coach Dana Holgorsen's staff, including the last three as defensive coordinator. He also was on the defensive staff under Rich Rodriguez from 2001 to 2007.

West Virginia athletic director Shane Lyons says it was important to secure Gibson's future with the team.

West Virginia was first in the Big 12 with 25 turnovers gained, second in scoring defense and third in total defense this season.
