WVU to take on Murray State in first round of NCAA Tournament

The West Virginia Mountaineers will be headed to sunny San Diego to take on Murray State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Mountaineers (24-10) earned the No. 5 seed in the East Region will take on the Racers (26-5) on Friday, March 16. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.

WVU, which lost in the Big 12 championship game Saturday night, will be making its 29th NCAA Tournament appearance and its ninth in the last 11 seasons. The Mountaineers are 24-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

West Virginia will be looking for better fortunes in California where they lost to Gonzaga 61-58 in the Sweet 16 last season. That game was played in San Jose.

The Murray State Racers earned a berth in the NCAA Title by defeating Belmont 68-51 in the Ohio Valley Championship game. It will be the Racers' 16th NCAA Tournament appearance and their first since 2012.

The Racers are heading into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 13 straight games. Murray State last lost on January 18.

The Mountaineers will play at about 4 p.m. on TNT.

The placement in the brackets sets up a possible matchup with Marshall if both teams win their first-round game.
