WVSU eyes more hardware in 2016

Being the coach that follows a legend is never easier.

Former WVSU head baseball coach Cal Bailey coached the Yellow Jackets for 37 years. He won 1,056 games and 18 conference titles during his time at State. He retired in 2014 following WVSU winning the MEC Tournament.

Longtime assistant coach Sean Loyd took over the program last season. He led the Jackets to another MEC Tournament Championship and an appearance in a Division II NCAA Regional in 2015.

"It was very gratifying but more than anything the players do it. The guys last year bought into the practice habits that we wanted them to create. They worked hard and they were goal oriented. That's where wanted to be and they got there." Loyd said.

The Jackets will attempt to build off their success and with nine returning seniors on the roster, are one of the teams to beat in the MEC.

"One of the things we talk about in the program is we want to make we send the seniors out on top. We put a lot of emphasis on our seniors. We give them a lot of responsibility. They're accountable a lot more than when they were freshmen, sophomores or juniors. So we put a lot of emphasis on those guys and we want to make sure we give the chance to go out on top." Loyd said.

The Yellow Jackets are now 8-6 in the young 2016 season and will next travel to Shepherd on Friday for a doubleheader.
