St. Albans wins first baseball state title in school history

For the first time in school history, the St. Albans Red Dragons are West Virginia state baseball champions.

The Red Dragons defeated the Hurricane Red Skins 8-2 Saturday at Appalachian Power Park to win their first AAA state title in school history.

St. Albans jumped out to an early lead when center fielder Jake Carr hit a solo shot over the right field wall, giving the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Red Dragons added four runs, and added two more in the sixth inning and scored their final run in the seventh.

Hurricane, trying to mount a late comeback, scored its only runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nathanial Dunham doubled to left field, sending two runs home.

St. Albans’ Chase Matheny was the winning pitcher in the contest. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up just five hits and two runs.
