Fairmont Senior, last season’s Class AA champion, got the 2017 boy’s state basketball tournament started in dominant fashion Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center.

No. 1 Fairmont State (23-3) ended No. 8 Herbert Hoover’s (13-14) Cinderella hopes. The Polar Bears scored 31 points off 22 Husky turnovers on their way to a 59-39 win in the first round of the Class AA state tournament.

Herbert Hoover, which made it to the state tournament despite having been ravaged by last June’s flood, got behind the 8-ball early scoring just 3 points in the first quarter. The Polar Bears led 14-3 after the first period of play and never looked back.

Fairmont Senior had three players score in double-figures and was led by Zyon Dobbs’ 14 point, 7 rebound, 5 steal performance. Tavon Horton scored 13 for the Polar Bears and Dante Stills added 11 points while grabbing 8 rebounds.

Herbert Hoover was led by Chase King. King shot 7-10 from the field and scored a game high 16 and also grabbed 14 rebounds.

With the win, Fairmont Senior advances to the semifinals and is one step closer to reaching the bar set by the Polar Bears girl’s team that won a state title just last week.

In the Class AA semifinals, the Polar Bears will take on the winner between No. 4 Philip Barbour and No. 5 Mingo Central at 7:15 Friday.
