A Marshall softball player, and West Virginia native will be representing the USA after being named to the 2017 National Softball Team.

Following a four day selection process, Marshall senior and former Cabell Midland High School standout Morgan Zerkle was named to the national team.

“It's truly a dream come true to be a part of the USA Women's National Softball Team,” Zerkle said in a news release from Marshall University. “I am truly blessed to get the opportunity to represent my country playing the sport that I love so much. I never imagined that this day would actually come.”

Zerkle is one of 20 players selected to the USA National Team, which is made up of 11 current collegiate student athletes and nine format NCAA players. The selection comes on the heels of the USA Selection Camp in Clearwater, Fla.

“Since this process began we have been telling ‘Z’ she belongs,” Marshall head softball coach Shonda Stanton said in the release. “We know the special caliber of athlete wearing the green and white and now she gets to represent the red, white and blue and that is awesome.”

In January 2016, Zerkle was one of 18 players named to the USA Women’s Elite Softball Team.

In five games with the Elite Team at the World Cup of Softball XI, Zerkle hit .667, scored five runs, drove in three runs and stole two bases. In her first at bat she hit a home run against Mexico.

Zerkle is the first Marshall softball player to be named to the USA Softball Women’s National Team. She was just the second Marshall student-athlete to play on the elite team.
