Bluefield caps off perfect season with Class AA state championship

No. 2 Bluefield capped off a perfect 13-0 season with a Class AA state championship Friday night at Wheeling Island Stadium.

The Beavers outlasted No. 4 Fairmont Senior (12-2) 29-26 to win their first state championship since 2009.

Fairmont Senior led 26-21 for much of the second half until Bluefield's Chandler Cooper scored the game-winning touchdown with just under 6 minutes remaining.

Throwing just three passes the entire game, Bluefield relied on its run game. The Beavers rushed for 279 yards, and all four of their touchdowns came via the run game.

Leading the way for Bluefield was senior Mookie Collier. Collier rushed for 199 yards on 26 carries and scored on a 60-yard run. Truck Edwards rushed for 81 yards on 18 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Quarterback Chandler Cooper threw just three passes and carried the ball just three times, but ended up scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run.

Quarterback Conner Neal led the way for Fairmont Senior. Neal completed 20 of 27 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns.
