The Belfry Pirates came across state lines and defeated Cabell Midland 34-14 in our Wendy’s Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week presented by the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute.

Cabell Midland (3-3) got the scoring starting midway through the first quarter when Ivan Vaughn took a hand off and got to the edge and raced 44 yards and dived over the pylon for the touchdown to give the Knights a 7-0 lead.

Belfry (6-1) would answer. Early in the second quarter quarterback Avery Browning faked a hand off and found Braxton Miller who made a great grab in the end zone to tie the game. Coming into the game, the Pirates had thrown the ball 16 times all season.

On Cabell Midland's next drive. Isaiah Duncan took an inside hand off, found a hole and broke loose for a long run and was finally brought down inside the Belfry 10-yard line. Just a few plays later, Duncan put the Knights back on top when he took a pitch and found the end zone.

Cabell Midland’s lead would not last long. In fact, it would last just a few seconds as Belfry’s Devin Varney took a short kickoff and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14.

In the second half, Belfry’s run game took over.

After a long drive to start the half, Belfry’s Derek Williams took a handoff at the 2-yard line and dived over the pile to put the Pirates up 21-14.

The Pirates would not look back.

After forcing a Cabell Midland punt, Wellman capped off another long Belfry drive with his second touchdown of the game to put the Pirates up 28-14.

Belfry quarterback Avery Browning would add another score late in the fourth quarter when he ran it in from 9 yards out to give the Pirates a 35-14 lead.

With 138 yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns, Wellman was named the Five Start Chevrolet Player of the Game. He also racked up 12 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
