A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT FOR APPLE... AS ITS APP STORE HITS A MAJOR MILESTONE.
IT HAPPENED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON WHEN AN OHIO MAN MADE THE FIFTY BILLIONTH DOWNLOAD.
BESIDES BRAGGING RIGHTS, HE WILL RECEIVE A TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR APP STORE GIFT CARD.
THE APP STORE OPENED IN JULY TWO THOUSAND EIGHT WITH FIVE HUNDRED APPS.
ACCORDING TO APPLE, CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN DOWNLOADING MORE THAN EIGHT HUNDRED APPS PER SECOND AT A RATE OF OVER TWO BILLION APPS PER MONTH.
IT'S THE STORE'S WAY OF TRACKING HOW BUSY THEY ARE... WHILE AT THE SAME TIME... TRACKING YOUR SHOPPING HABITS.
BUT THE QUESTION IS,, SHOULD THIS BE CONSIDERED AN INVASION OF PRIVACY?
JENNA CAIAZZO DIGS DEEPER TO FIND OUT.
it's like habit for many of us shoppers...
You walk into your favorite national retail store - and hook up to their wifi.
Then, continue shopping until you've got everything you need.
"Its enabling the store to say wow, its really crowded in the shoe section."
Alarming information to some - the minute to connect to a store wifi network.
Now, stores like Home Depot and Nordstrom are watching you....
"It may look like a smart phone, but now this is like a gps tracking device to major retail store - the min you turn on your wifi....when you leave."
The goal of this "tracking" system is for major retailers to see where most people are shopping, where they need more associates, and how to operate the store's flow.
Technology guru Craig Agranoff says its a positive thing for the consumer.
"I don't know about you but I've waited a while bunch of times at these big box chains...how they are able to say lets make a sale and get personal attention...and help me."
Shoppers...are getting used to this new idea.
Alex Medina - Tampa
"I don't think its a big deal, hopefully your doing the right thing, not on a bad website or stealing...but if your on their property..its not a big deal."
Willy Mock - WPB
"I don't do anything wrong, I don't steal, I don't pick stuff out, but I don't like anyone tracking me, regardless, that is an invasion of my privacy."

ON CAPITOL HILL
JUST TWO DAYS AFTER GETTING FIRED.. MILLER SAYS THERE WAS NO POLITICAL AGENDA WHEN CONSERVATIVE GROUPS WERE TARGETED WHEN THEY WENT FOR TAX EXEMPT STATUS,
THE AGENCY HAS ADMITTED TO INAPPROPRIATELY SCRUTINIZING TEA PARTY ORGANIZATIONS THAT APPLIED FOR THE TAX-EXEMPT STATUS. BUT THE IRS LARGELY MAINTAINED A HANDS-OFF POLICY WITH THE MUCH LARGER ORGANIZATIONS ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT THAT WERE MOST INFLUENTIAL IN THE 2012 ELECTIONS
ADVOCATES FOR DISCLOSURE WORRY THAT GOVERNMENT REGULATORS WILL BE LESS LIKELY TO SCRUTINIZE THE MORE POWERFUL GROUPS GOING FORWARD FOR FEAR THEY WILL APPEAR TO BE TARGETING GROUPS FOR POLITICAL REASONS.
OUR NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT KRISTINE FRAZAO EXAMINES WHETHER WE SHOULD ELIMINATE THE IRS ENTIRELY.
(EXTERIORS OF THE IRS)
A GOVERNMENT AGENCY IN THE SPOTLIGHT...CAUGHT PLAYING POLITICS WITH POSITIONS OF POWER.
IT'S RAISING NEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW TO FIX, SIMPLIFY AND EVEN LOWER THE CURTAIN THE I-R-S AS WE KNOW IT.
Pete Sepp/Executive Vice President, National Taxpayers Union
"There will always be some kind of federal tax authority. it's something we all have to live with. We don't have to live with one that is so intrusive."
PETE SEPP IS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AT THE NATIONAL TAXPAYERS UNION AND SAYS LIMITING THE POWER OF THE I-R-S SHOULD BE A PRIORITY.
EARLIER THIS YEAR THE FAIR TAX ACT OF 2013 WAS INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND SOUGHT TO DO JUST THAT, (PULL OUT SUMMARY IN FULLSCREEN) BY REPEALING THE INCOME TAX, SETTING A NATIONAL SALES TAX, AND GRANTING STATES THE POWER TO COLLECT TAX REVENUES.
IT WAS CO-SPONSORED BY 63 CONGRESSMEN AND WOMEN. AMONG THEM - FLORIDA CONGRESSMAN JOHN MICA,
WHO SAYS THE RECENT SCANDALS HIGHLIGHT A SYSTEM FULL OF ABUSES AND THE NEED TO ACT.
Rep. John Mica/(R-FL)
"Maybe looking at a fairer simpler tax structure with less bureaucracy with less subjective decisions by bureaucrats."
FORMER CONGRESSMAN AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RON PAUL HAS BEEN LOBBYING TO END THE FEDERAL RESERVE, ALONG WITH THE I-R-S, FOR DECADES
Ron Paul/Former Congressman (R-TX) and OP Presidential Candidate
"The taxes we pay are a symptom of runaway government and that is the problem."
Stand-up: Kristine Frazao
"As far as solutions - Three times in recent history there have been major changes made to the way the IRS functions: the Taxpayer Bill of Rights in 1988, a revised version in 1996, and The Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998. Still, critics say those changes have not gone far enough.
Pete Sepp/Executive Vice President, National Taxpayers Union
"Our tax system can't be enforced solely thru threats. It's got to be enforced thru people's acceptance that its a generally fair system, one worth complying with voluntarily.
TO GET TO THAT POINT, SEPP SAYS, SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OF *SOME* KIND MUST BE MADE.
I'M KRISTINE FRAZAO REPORTING
SEVERAL LAWMAKERS IN THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE ARE ALREADY DRAFTING NEW LEGISLATION FOR CHANGES TO THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE.
WE'LL FIND OUT IN THE COMING DAYS AND WEEKS WHICH IDEAS HAVE A SHOT AT BRINGING REAL CHANGE TO THE AGENCY.
HEALTH MINUTE:BABY'S MILESTONES
-REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
BABIES DEVELOP AT DIFFERENT RATES, BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN MILESTONES DURING THE FIRST YEAR THAT PARENTSCAN WATCH FOR.
"There can be a range of several months in which the development of a new skill is entirely normal."
ONE OF THE FIRST - AND MOST ANTICIPATED - MILESTONES - BABY'S FIRST TRUE OR "SOCIAL" SMILE. IT USUALLY HAPPENS AROUND TWO MONTHS.
"A social smile is when you work at it a little bit, and the baby, suddenly, their whole face lights up."
AT TWO TO THREE MONTHS, BABIES SHOULD BE ABLE TO LIFT AND SUPPORT THEIR OWN HEADS.
AND SOON AFTER THEIR FIRST ATTEMPTS AT TALKING.
"A four-month-old will be making AH, EE, OO - those kinds of sounds."
WILL COME LATER - AT AROUND 12 TO 15 MONTHS.
MOST BABIES ROLL OVER AT 6 OR 7 MONTHS OLD, CRAW AT 9, AND WALK AT ABOUT 12 MONTHS.
NO TWO BABIES PROGRESS AT THE SAME RATE, BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN RED FLAGS THAT MAY INDICATE DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEMS.
PARENTS SHOULD CONSULT A DOCTOR IF AT 3 MONTHS THE BABY LACKS HEAD CONTROL AND APPEARS FLOPPY IN PARENTS ARMS,
IF THE INFANT DOESN'T SMILE, RESPOND TO NOISE, OR HAS TROUBLE WITH EYE CONTACT.
FOR TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE I'M SUSAN HENDRICKS.
AND FOR NEW PARENT.. DOCTORS ARE NOW ADVISING TO START YOUR LITTLE ONE ON SOLID FOODS BETWEEN 4 TO 6 MONTHS..
KIDS MENTAL DISORDERS
THIS STUDY FOCUSES ON DIAGNOSIS IN SIX TYPES OF DISORDERS INCLUDING ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) AND AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.
THE MOST COMMON MENTAL DISORDER IS A-D-H-D... FOLLOWED BY BEHAVIORAL OR CONDUCT PROBLEMS, AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS AND TOURETTE SYNDROME.
THE REPORT ALSO NOTED BOYS WERE MORE LIKELY THAN GIRLS TO HAVE ANY TYPE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
AND THEY ARE ALSO MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE.
STUDY AUTHORS ARE NOT SURE WHETHER THERE ARE A RISE IN CASES.... OR GREATER AWARENESS ON HOW TO DIAGNOSE THESE CONDITIONS.
TROUT IN CLASSROOM
EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR PATRICK MCMURTRY TELLS US MORE ABOUT THE TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAM IN THIS WEEK'S WEST VIRGINIA WILDLIFE.
Amanda Craig's school is here after a nearly year long committement to raising a bunch of fingerlings ready to be released today.
That's a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun, especially today when these little guys get to go free, and their little managers get to feel like proud parents watching their little ones leave the nest. They learned a lot this year.
That's some good stuff, you can tell these kids are committed to their trout. They have been since the very beginning.
That's the beginning of wildlife management, and maybe one day one of these bright kids will make a profession out of working with animals. For WVWL, PM EWN

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
IN TONIGHT'S SCREEN GEMS, EYEWITNESS NEWS ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER KENNIE BASS TELLS US ABOUT "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS."
Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: In director J.J. Abrams re-booted "Star Trek" universe, Kirk, Spock, McCoy and all the rest are still finding their way.
The young crewmembers are learning about each other. We're seeing how those legendary friendships were formed.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" takes some of the things we've long known about the series and turns them on their pointy ears.
A terrorist played by Benedict Cumberbatch destroys a Starfleet facility, killing several people in the process. He also launches an attack on the organization's HQ, taking out top commanders.
Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Mr. Spock are tasked to find the fugitive and take him out. Their journey takes them to the Klingon homeworld, where the natives are not pleased about receiving Federation guests.
Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: Starfleet wants the terrorist dead, but Kirk decides instead to capture the villain and return him to Earth for trial. But the bad guy says he has his reasons for attacking Starfleet.
Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: I can't get into the guts of this movie without spoiling some major surprises, so I won't. I will tell you that Abrams has crafted a high-energy, suspenseful movie that is full of "wow" moments.
Pine's Kirk is cocky and reckless. The events of the film knock him down a peg or two, and that's not a bad thing. Quinto's Spock still hasn't figured out how to incorporate his human half into the equation and that causes tension. The rest of the cast is spot on.
Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are very good as the bridge crew. Simon Pegg's Scotty gets the most to do as a supporting cast member and he nails it. Pegg is funny, but also manages to be the miracle worker that we expect.
Abrams takes classic "Star Trek" moments and twists them into a new form...that while familiar, still manage to be brand new.
This is a trek well worth taking, as it explores the choices we make and the consequences of them.
You can see it in the Charleston area at Marquee Cinemas at Southridge and in Huntington at Pullman Square.
And now you have a chance to win a pair of movie passes and a concession stand combo pack courtesy of Screen Gems and brought to you by Frontier Communications.
Just be the 11th caller at 866-831-0811 and you win! Good luck.
For Screen Gems, I'm Kennie Bass. Enjoy the show.
"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" IS RATED PG-13 FOR INTENSE SEQUENCES OF SCI-FI ACTION AND VIOLENCE.

Rich: "I knew on today's race I'd be basically by myself after that first four. So, I just had to push myself. I wish I could have pushed a little harder. Still got the win."
Sebastian: "It means the world to me. I've done this ever since Hershey Track and Field meets when I was nice years old. Just going from there to now is unbelievable."
Castro: "I've been training all year round and this is more than anything I've ever wanted. All I wanted do the whole year was be a state champ. So I just sent all out and ran for my life, pretty much."
Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 14th Triple Crown victory, most in horse racing history.
Orb finished fourth. The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday's race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.
