West Virginia State Police said a woman was arrested on charges of concealment of a dead body after the body of an 11-year-old girl was discovered after a car crash in Pocahontas County.

State Police said the driver, Erica Newsome of Florida, was charged after troopers responded about 11:20 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 250 on Allegheny Mountain near the Virginia border. The girl was found dead at the scene. State Police said it did not appear, however, that she died from injuries in the crash.

Newsome is currently lodged in the Southern Regional Jail. Jail records list her age as 37.

A criminal complaint filed in Pocahontas County said Newsome spoke with an officer at the scene and said she was abusive to her daughter and killed her. Witnesses at the scene said they saw the female driver leave the vehicle with a juvenile wrapped in a blanket and then take the body over the hill, the complaint said. The coroner said the juvenile had been deceased for at least 24 hours prior to the discovery of the body at the scene.

The complaint said Newsome reported she picked her daughter up from her bed and put her in the truck on Friday and during a two-day drive from Jacksonville, Fla., to the scene of the accident, the girl did not move, eat, drink, speak or use the restroom.

The Jacksonville, Fla., Sheriff’s Department is involved in the investigation.
