Oak Hill woman drowns while boating on New River

The National Park Service has identified a woman who drowned on the New River.

Christina Dawn Schneider, 46, of Oak Hill drowned after a boat she was on overturned on the New River at about 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Park Service. Her body was recovered a short time after the boat overturned.

The release said three people were on the Jon boat when it overturned in the Cunard area of the river. Two of the people were able to swim to shore.

No one on the boat was wearing a life jacket.

The incident remains under investigation by the National Park Service.

Park officials said they are using this incident to reminds people how important it is to always wear a life jacket when on the water.
