Man arrested for allegedly shooting girlfriend with high-powered rifle in Ohio County
OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTOV) - A man has been arrested after a shooting on Stone Church Road in Ohio County.
Christopher "Kevin" Wildern is in jail after he allegedly shot his girlfriend with a high-powered rifle. She suffered serious injuries to her arm and was air lifted to a Pittsburgh hospital.
"It was a pretty bad injury, so when deputies got there, they had to use their stop-bleed kit and make a tourniquet to prevent further issues until medical personnel got there,” Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard said. "It's supposedly an accidental shooting, but that is still under investigation.”
For now, that's not why Wildern was arrested.
Wildern is not allowed to have a weapon because a court recently ruled he was recently found mentally defective because of a methamphetamine problem. He allegedly told police he kept the rifle under his bed anyway.
He also has a criminal history dealing with meth.
The Ohio County Sheriff's Department is handling the case, and West Virginia State Police and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded to the incident because it happened at a trailer near the county line.
Sand Hill Elementary School had to be secured because the shooting was close by.
Wildern is in the Northern Regional Jail on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
