West Virginia State Police are investigating an altercation inside the Central Regional Jail in Flatwoods that has left one inmate seriously injured.

Troopers said Albert Fuhrmaneck's injuries are life-threatening. A spokesman with the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety said the inmate-on-inmate incident resulted in outside medical attention for Fuhrmaneck. He was awaiting trial on charges out of Braxton County for being a prohibited person with a firearm, assault on a police officer and obstructing.

Troopers say he is a registered sex offender out of Maryland.

There is no word on how Fuhrmaneck was injured as the internal and criminal investigation is ongoing.

“There was an inmate-on-inmate incident that has resulted in the providing of outside medical attention to this inmate,” said Larry Messina, communications director for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. “RJA has begun an internal review and has brought in the State Police, as is the procedure in such instances. The respective investigations remain ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.”

Messina said Thursday that Fuhrmaneck remains hospitalized.
