Crashes on West Virginia Turnpike snarl traffic in Kanawha County
KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
Both lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike were shut down temporarily after crashes Friday morning, causing a huge backup for southbound travelers in Kanawha County.
Accidents just south of the toll booth in Kanawha County produced a traffic jam that halted southbound travel and backed up traffic for nearly 10 miles.
The Turnpike reopened about noon, but there were still delays.
Early reports indicated debris from the first crash struck vehicles in the northbound lanes causing another mishap. Traffic was also delayed in that direction.
It's unclear if heavy rain played a role in the big wreck involving a semi-trailer on Interstate 77.
